The yellow-crowned night heron is one of the more mysterious and lesser known members of the heron family. I‘ve always thought they had a lovely sounding Latin name, Nyctanassa violacea, and I just learned it roughly translates to “violet colored night queen” which is AMAZING. I shall be calling them Violet colored night queens from here on out.
