I spent a lot of time crabbing, shrimping, and fishing with my dad when I was a little girl. We would catch these tiny crabs in our cast net, and I'd sit in the boat with my hands in the bait bucket, allowing the crabs and shrimp to skitter around my hands and trying not to get pinched. Up close, crabs and shrimp have amazing little colors you don't normally notice. This painting is a bit exaggerated, but the intricate patterns and colors on the crab's shell are an recreation of my memory of childhood wonder and delight at these tiny creatures.
