Red knots are some serious long distance travelers. They fly up to 9,300 miles every spring from the the southern tip of South America, all the way to the Canadian arctic to breed. Then they fly all that distance, AGAIN, in the autumn when it’s time to return south. They have many important stopover points along the way to refuel (I mean you can’t travel without snacks, right??). For the rufa sub-species, the most important of these stopovers is along the Delaware Bay, where their migration lines up with the annual horseshoe crab spawn. There, they feast upon billions of horseshoe crab eggs! You will also see them on our Georgia coast at the right time of year, sporting their robin red breeding plumage.
