Title: "Piping Plover"

I feel like shorebirds, especially plovers, are an under appreciated group of our feathered friends. Their quick movements and muted plumage make them hard to get a good look at, but if you have a little patience (and a good set of binoculars 🔭 😉) you can watch some Bravo worthy shorebird drama go down. There can be intense territorial disputes over the best feeding grounds. You can see the males attempting to woo females, which often involves little dances 🕺🏼 or, if you are a tern, food bribes (I mean what woman could resist? 😂).

Most plover couples stay together to help feed and protect their eggs and young, even going as far as feigning injury in a “broken wing” display to lure potential predators away. (But if you ever see this, you are probably too close to a nest or young and should carefully leave the area 😁).

Lastly, many species, such as this piping plover, are regularly banded to help researchers monitor the population. You can make note of the band combinations on the birds you see or photograph and can report when and where the birds were sighted!
