I grew up finding knobbed whelks on my Georgia coast beaches. These were the shells I’d keep so that, long after I’d gone home, I could hold them up to my ear and still hear the ocean waves. Sometimes I’d find one with the mollusk still inside and I’d wade out into the waves, or a tide pool, to return it to the water
