American Oystercatchers are one of the species of shorebirds I had the chance to work with during my time as a wildlife biologist. I would walk remote beaches and oyster berms, searching for their highly camouflaged eggs and would monitor their nests to record how many hatchlings successfully fledged. You knew you were close to a nest, even if you couldn't see it, when you heard the high-pitched keening calls of the parents, flying in concerned circles around us until our work was finished.
